While having breakfast at a hotel frequented by foreigners, a young waitress approached the table and, in a timid, polite voice, asked for the room number in English.

I had to check in with myself. I decided to let her finish her well-rehearsed question.

I could have stopped her and answered in her mother tongue, but I managed to take a silent, deep breath and responded in English.

We both learned something new.
